Sunnyvale Wrestling Club Builds Momentum Across All Levels

The Sunnyvale Wrestling Club continues to build momentum this season, showcasing success at every level of the program. From the adult team competing on the national stage at the U.S. Open, to hosting a premier local event at the Firebird Open, and following it up with another strong showing at the SCVWA Grizzlies Open, Sunnyvale athletes are proving that hard work, resilience, and courage are at the heart of the program.

Wrestling is one of the toughest sports there is—there are no teammates to rely on once you step on the mat. Every athlete who competes represents not only their club, but their preparation, discipline, and willingness to test themselves. Across all three events, Sunnyvale wrestlers embraced that challenge.

U.S. Open – Adult Team Earns National Honors

The Sunnyvale Wrestling Club adult program stepped onto the national stage at the U.S. Open, competing against some of the top athletes in the country in one of the most competitive tournaments of the year.

Leading the way was Austin Solari, who delivered an outstanding performance in the Masters A 70 kg division, finishing as the runner-up in the nation. Solari’s run was defined by dominance and composure—opening with an 11-0 technical fall, followed by a first-period pin in the quarterfinals, and then a gritty 2-1 semifinal victory that showcased his ability to win tight, high-pressure matches.

In the Masters A 130 kg division, Collin Johnston fought his way to a 6th place finish, highlighted by a lightning-fast 10-0 technical fall in just 42 seconds. Johnston battled through a deep bracket, showing both explosiveness and toughness against experienced opponents.

James H. Williams Jr. demonstrated true resilience in the Masters E 78 kg division, earning 3rd place after battling back through the consolation bracket. After an early loss, Williams responded with determination, including a 31-second fall in the consolation semifinals, before finishing strong with a 7-0 decision victory in the bronze medal match.

Williams also stepped up to compete in the Senior Men’s division, taking on elite-level competition—an example of the courage it takes to challenge yourself at the highest levels of the sport.

Stepping onto the mat takes courage. It means facing uncertainty, pushing through nerves, and being willing to learn from both wins and losses. Across these three tournaments, Sunnyvale wrestlers—from youth to adults—demonstrated that mindset.

With dedicated athletes, supportive families, and a committed coaching staff, Sunnyvale Wrestling Club continues to build not just successful competitors, but resilient individuals.

The momentum is building—and the best is still ahead.
