Sunnyvale Wrestling Club Closes Out a Successful Spring Season
The final month of the 2026 spring wrestling season was one of the busiest and most rewarding stretches of the year for Sunnyvale Wrestling Club. From regional competition in Utah to local championships and California's toughest state tournaments, our athletes demonstrated the dedication, discipline, and resilience that define our program.
Spring wrestling demands a special level of commitment. Athletes balance school, family obligations, and rigorous training schedules while traveling across California—and sometimes beyond—to compete against increasingly difficult competition. Every early morning workout, every evening practice, and every weekend spent on the road contributes to the growth that takes place throughout the season.
During May, Sunnyvale Wrestling Club athletes competed at four major events: the Western Regional Championships in Utah, the Beach Boardwalk Open in Santa Cruz, the SCVWA Championships in Sunnyvale, and the California USA Wrestling State Championships in Fresno. Across those four tournaments, Sunnyvale wrestlers earned regional championships, state medals, Fargo qualifications, and numerous individual titles.
Western Regional Championships
The month began at the 2026 Western Regional Championships in Farmington, Utah, where athletes competed against many of the top wrestlers from across the western United States.
Sunnyvale's top performance came from Lillian Fonceca, who captured the 16U Girls Freestyle Championship, earning a Western Regional title and qualifying for Fargo. Jameson Moore earned a 3rd-place finish in Junior Greco-Roman, while Maggie Tobacco placed 6th in Junior Girls Freestyle. Together, those performances secured three Fargo qualifications for Sunnyvale athletes.
Sunnyvale-affiliated athlete Eliana McBeth also had an outstanding tournament, placing 3rd in Junior Girls Freestyle and winning the Junior Girls Greco-Roman Championship.

More Than Medals
While the results from these four tournaments are impressive, they tell only part of the story.
The true measure of a successful season is the growth of the athletes who committed themselves to the process. Throughout the spring, Sunnyvale wrestlers learned to overcome adversity, respond to setbacks, support teammates, and continue improving regardless of the outcome of any individual match.
The coaching staff would like to thank every athlete, parent, volunteer, and supporter who contributed to the success of this season. Wrestling is a demanding sport, and the accomplishments of our athletes would not be possible without the sacrifices made by the entire Sunnyvale Wrestling Club community.
Although the spring season has come to a close, the work continues.
Our youth wrestlers will remain active throughout the summer as they continue developing their skills and preparing for future opportunities. For our high school athletes, attention now turns toward Fargo and National Dual Team competition, where Sunnyvale wrestlers will have the opportunity to represent themselves, their club, and California on some of the biggest stages in amateur wrestling.
The foundation has been built. The next chapter begins this summer.
