Sunnyvale Wrestling Club Showcases Hard Work and Growth Across Major April Tournaments

April was a defining month for the Sunnyvale Wrestling Club (SWC), as athletes competed in two major events — the 2026 USA Wrestling Women’s National Championships (April 9–12), and the CAUSAW Kids Greco State & Cadet/Junior Freestyle Fargo Qualifier (April 17–19). The club also participated in the SCVWA Silver Hawk Open (April 11).

More than just results, the month reflected the hard work, discipline, and commitment these athletes have been putting in every day in the practice room. Long practices and countless repetitions showed up on the mat, as Sunnyvale wrestlers competed with confidence, toughness, and heart at every level.

SCVWA Silver Hawk Open: Effort Turning Into Results

SWC opened the month with an outstanding showing at the Silver Hawk Open, where the team’s work ethic translated directly into success across all age groups.

The club crowned multiple champions, including Nolan Edmonds (12U Freestyle), Dominic Kaharov (12U Freestyle & Greco), Fan Wang (14U Freestyle), and Ali Nabiullin (8U Greco). These performances reflected not only talent, but the consistent effort put in behind the scenes.

The number of finalists further demonstrated the team’s preparation and dedication. Wrestlers like Fernando Ramirez, Landen Squires, Victor Lopez Villatoro, Jorge Villagomez, Kennedy Ancheta, and Casey Nguyen battled their way to second-place finishes, while many others reached the podium.

From the youngest athletes stepping onto the mat to the more experienced competitors, SWC showed that hard work is paying off. Every match—win or loss—was another step forward.

Women’s National Championships: Tested at the Highest Level

At the USA Wrestling Women’s National Championships, SWC athletes faced some of the best competition in the country—an opportunity that demands not only skill, but preparation and mental toughness.

Lillian Fonceca embodied that mindset, battling back through the consolation bracket with multiple dominant wins, including a technical fall and a pin, before narrowly missing advancement in a close round-of-16 match. Her performance reflected resilience and determination built through hard training.

Maya Camarena opened with a quick pin, showing her readiness to compete on the national stage, while Kiana Lien fought through adversity to earn a hard-fought win in the consolation rounds.

While the podium remained just out of reach, the experience gained at this level is invaluable—and it is built on the foundation of daily effort. Competing against the nation’s best is a direct result of the commitment these athletes have shown all season.

Fargo Qualifier: Hard Work Produces Champions

This last weekend, SWC saw its training and dedication translate into major success at the CAUSAW Fargo Qualifier.

Three athletes rose to the top of the podium:

  • Haru Duus (Cadet Girls 145 lbs) – 1st Place

  • Victor Lopez Villatoro (Cadet Boys 215 lbs) – 1st Place

  • Kiana Lien (Junior Girls 110 lbs) – 1st Place

Each championship performance was the result of countless hours of preparation, focus, and perseverance.

SWC also saw strong finishes across the board:

  • Jameson Moore (Junior Boys 144 lbs) – 3rd Place

  • Ethan Goodwin (Intermediate Greco) – 6th Place

  • Lillian Fonceca (Cadet & Junior Girls) – 7th and 6th Place

  • Maya Camarena (Junior Girls 135 lbs) – 6th Place

Many of these athletes battled back through the consolation rounds, showing grit and determination—qualities that are developed long before competition day.

A Culture Built on Effort

Across all three tournaments, one thing was clear: the success of Sunnyvale Wrestling Club is built on hard work.

Behind every medal, every match, and every improvement is time spent in the wrestling room—drilling technique, pushing through conditioning, and supporting teammates. The results seen in April are a direct reflection of that commitment.

Just as important, the athletes who didn’t reach the podium gained something just as valuable—experience, confidence, and the motivation to keep improving.

Firebird Open at Fremont High School

Sunnyvale Wrestling Club now turns its attention to hosting the SCVWA Firebird Open on April 25 at Fremont High School in Sunnyvale. Hosting a tournament is a major team effort, and it takes the same level of commitment off the mat as our athletes show on it.

We are asking for volunteer support from our SWC families and community to help ensure the event runs smoothly. From table workers to setup and hospitality, every role plays an important part in creating a great experience for all athletes and teams.

Looking Ahead

With multiple champions, numerous finalists, and national-level experience, SWC continues to build momentum. The foundation is strong, and the direction is clear.

If April is any indication, the hard work being put in by Sunnyvale wrestlers is not only paying off—it’s setting the stage for even greater success ahead.

The future of SWC is bright, and it’s being built one practice, one match, and one tournament at a time.
